2000 years later, this city frozen in time, has yet to deliver all of its secrets concerning the eruption and the last moments of life in this ancient Italian city.
The petrified people and animals of Pompeii are not fossils, nor statues! Of the inhabitants of Pompeii who succumbed to the eruption, archaeologists have found only bones in the voids left by their bodies decomposed in the solidified volcanic ash. The result ? Surprisingly detailed 3D “negatives” that ingenious scientists reveal by filling them with plaster and excavating them. These casts are witnesses of the very last moments of the inhabitants of Pompeii. Did you know ? Now you do!
The VEI scale is not a linear scale but logarithmic. To understand this, one only has to compare the eruption of Mount St Helens and that of the Vesuvius volcano, the proportions of which are relatively well known, to other eruptions of higher VEI.
